The author had attended Merton College, Oxford, where Edmund Blunden was among his tutors, at the end of the previous decade - in the ODNB, Jon Stallworthy remarks that this book 'rendered the war in the western desert as graphically as Blunden's Undertones of War (1928) had depicted life and death on the western front'.With a sixteen page appendix of poems by the author.

FIRST EDITION, frontispiece and 2 further colour-printed plates by the author along with several text illustrations by the same, pages browned as usual, pp. 141, xvi, 8vo, original quarter red cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt with a spot at head and slight rubbing at tips, grey boards with a couple of spots, corners pushed, very faint partial browning to free endpapers with contemporary ownership inscription to flyleaf, good
