A letter from the author, dated to November in the year of publication, is tipped to the flyleaf, the recipient Edgar Waters, whose ownership inscription is above: here Arkell professes to having 'tried to capture, before it is too late, the old, happy relationship between master & man', recalling 'a mutual respect & sense of responsibility which are not encouraged today' and thanking Waters profusely for his kindness, appreciation and 'friendship for Old Herbaceous, & his author'.Arkell's character is 'a countryman of an older and more peaceful generation' (blurb), evoking a pre-War bucolic idyll - his world of country gardens and village shows beautifully depicted in Minton's busy illustrations.

FIRST EDITION, illustrated title-page (also reproduced on the front cover), frontispiece, 20 chapter head-pieces and 13 illustrations within the text (6 full-page) printed in green, all from drawings by John Minton, pp. 155, crown 8vo, original green cloth, the upper board repeating the title-vignette (blocked in red), backstrip lettered in red and sunned faintly through the dustjacket, slight lean to spine, top edge green, flyleaf with the contemporary ownership inscription of Edgar Waters (see below), the John Minton dustjacket in excellent shape with a tiny amount of rubbing to extremities and a miniscule nick at foot of lower joint-fold, very good
