The author had attended Merton College, Oxford, where Edmund Blunden was among his tutors, at the end of the previous decade - in the ODNB, Jon Stallworthy remarks that this book 'rendered the war in the western desert as graphically as Blunden's Undertones of War (1928) had depicted life and death on the western front'.With a sixteen page appendix of poems by the author.
