Bookseller Notes

Macdougall's translation of the Swiss author's 1925 novel had been published, with the title 'The End of All Men', in the US the year before, but his translation from the French is here revised by Alex Comfort and with the addition of designs by Edward Burra. Ramuz was one of the major Swiss authors of the century; this novel 'tells of the irruption of a great universal catastrophe in the everyday life of common men and women' (blurb) - an event made ever more relevant to British and American readers, as Rougemont's introduction contextualises, by the recently concluded War.
