Rare Book
Inscribed by the author: 'To Basil Clarke who has been like a big brother to me James Hodson 2/xii/18'. A memoir of the Great War, scarce, recounting his time with the 20th Royal Fusiliers before he was invalided out with 'heart-trouble' with the Fourth Battle of Ypres still ongoing. It includes a couple of poems. The recipient was a notable war correspondent, who had been the first reporter to arrive at Ypres following German bombardment. Both he and Hodson were Lancashire men (Altrincham and Bury respectively); Hodson, too, became a war correspondent - writing a multi-volume account of the Second World War for Gollancz, who also published his First World War novel 'Grey Dawn - Red Night' in 1929.
