Bookseller Notes

Notable for including amongst its cast the young Laurence Olivier, whose career it helped to launch, even if the play itself was not a great success: as John Gielgud recalled in his 1979 memoir, 'Olivier made his name in three plays that failed with the publicBeau Geste, The Circle of Chalk [...], and The Rats of Norway by Keith Winter. In all three plays he got superb notices personally, so that in a curious way it made his career to be in failures'. Gladys Cooper was also amongst the original cast, and receives the work's printed dedication.
