Bookseller Notes

The author's debut novel, positively reviewed by Christopher Isherwood when published in the US - comparing it to 'A Passage to India' as a 'brilliant [...] and deeply moving novel of interracial relationships'. It is set in North Africa, in Algiers - where the titular protagonist, Harlan Childress, an American colonel, has been stationed. It is, the blurb suggests, 'one of the first works of fiction to deal with what is for America an entirely new problem, that has come upon her with lightning suddenness: her responsibilities as the arbiter of world power in the post-war age'.The dustjacket carries a marvellous design by John Minton, this a nice example.
