Bookseller Notes
The poet Henry Newbolt, who had studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, served at the Admiralty and the Foreign Office during the War and was an authority on its naval operations. The present work is a detailed and lively account of a new front in marine warfare. In his opening chapter, the author calls it 'not an epic - not a poetical work at all. Half of it is mere technical detail; and the rest plain fact plainly told' - but it does contain due 'admiration for national heroes' and 'recognition of national greatness', calling the submarine war 'the main battlefield of our spiritual crusade, as well as a vital military campaign'.The printed dedication is to his friend, John Buchan.
