Bookseller Notes

An uproarious wartime utopian satire, scarce. 'Mervyn Hobhouse is a paunchy, bibulous, red-haired Englishman' (blurb), upon whom it falls to protect the Island of Meridia from the rival threats of Communists and 'the Strong Men' (i.e., Fascists). Humour is seen as the weapon to combat the Pomposity of the threatening will-to-power, in a mode analogous to Chaplin's 'The Great Dictator'. The author was born in Oxford, and played cricket for the county. The novel carries a wonderful dustjacket design by Clarke Hutton.
