Bookseller Notes

A scarce book of poetry, her debut; Clarke, later a tutor at Cheltenham Ladies' College, had studied Classics at Newnham College, Cambridge, during which years she pursued mystical experiences - one of the poems here, 'Vision of Him', being included in 'The Oxford Book of English Mystical Verse' in 1917, quite an accolade for an undergraduate. Much of the verse is in that vein, though it sometimes stoops to more earthly matters, including a sequence of four sonnets occasioned by the Peace Conference of 1919.
