Bookseller Notes

Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: 'For Ivor Cutler, "... feet toward/ Helpston and the pole star." Warm regards, Michael Longley, 27 April 78'. The message incorporates a quotation from a poem towards the end of this volume - 'Journey Out of Essex', about John Clare. The recipient was the Scottish singer and poet, who had come to prominence in the late '60s, under the aegis of The Beatles and John Peel. Preceded by two pamphlets, this is Longley's first major collection.
