Signed by the author at the foot of his photographic portrait facing p. xvi, the signature dated to November 1928.Campbell was awarded the Victoria Cross in the Great War, for his work with 'mystery ships', or 'Q-ships', which disguised military vessels as merchant ships - luring enemy submarines to a surface attack before opening fire on them.

FIRST EDITION, colour-printed frontispiece and 16 monochrome plates with further illustrations to the text, faint browning to inner-margin of half-title and final text-page, pp. xx, 300, 8vo, original navy blue cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in gilt, gentle knock to bottom corner of upper board, a few very faint spots to edges, dustjacket with laid down illustration by Charles Pears (also used as frontispiece), some very light dustsoiling overall, very good
