An important work in the study of mazes.The printed dedication is to Matthews' daughter, Zeta Eastes, whose 'innocent prattlings on the summer sands of Surrey' inspired this work - photographs of the small child enjoying mazes drawn in the sand by her father appear in figs. 141 and 142. Some 70 years later, Eastes poignantly reminisced about the mazes her father would make 'for his little daughter to run around, square, always different and multicursal, with a bunch of seaweed at the centre' and wondered 'alas too late, what made him interested in mazes', noting that after the war 'within two and a half years of returning from France he had researched, written, printed and published this book.'
