Sister Hildegard succumbs, in snowdrift in an alley, to old age. Dani is scared and alone in a small efficiency apartment in an empty Cutter City apartment building owned by the Killapaka. She turns nine at midnight, and the Scent has chosen that time to reveal itself. Mr. Anthill and the Father smell it and are the way. The Killapaka have, fortunately, chosen that exact night to address the City Planning Commission's factory farm and its workers, so their attention is turned elsewhere.
No cavalry has yet arrived to save the girl. Soon, Boner and his Pee Company will be joining the hunt.
