Bookseller Notes

The notebook here reproduced dates from the young artist's time at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid - his second visit to the capital, with the determined auto-didact largely eschewing the academic pretext to pursue his learning in the city, for which this notebook provides an intriguing record. It shows Picasso's early leaning towards familiar themes: bulls, women, self-portraiture; there are a couple of copies of works by Goya.
