Platero was a Uruguayan writer and diplomat, a noted beauty and friend of Borges - the latter's introduction references Henry James, Poe, the Arabian Nights, Don Quixote, Virgil, and Seneca.The book was latterly in the collection of Borges's translator Norman Thomas di Giovanni.
