Le département des hautes-alpes est aujourd'hui un de ceux où l'instruction primaire est le plus répandue, et l'on y trouve fort peu de personnes qui ne sachent ni lire ni écrire.
Il n'en fut pas toujours ainsi. Il y a un peu plus de cent ans, nos pères étaient loin d'ètre aussi favorisés et aussi avancés, sous ce 'rapport, que nous le sommes. L'enseignement était alors peu prospère dans nos Alpes.
