Publisher's Synopsis

The Brazilian student movement has a solid history of resisting the regimes of exception that have developed in this country. Since their foundation in August 1937, Brazilian students have been prominent in the main events of national history, especially during the military dictatorship. After 1964, when UNE was outlawed, the students, organised or separately, developed their own tactics to fight the military regime, often allying themselves with other guerrilla groups in order to develop their fight against the dictatorship. In addition, students also raised important flags during this period: they fought against the reforms proposed by the MEC, against the introduction of tuition fees at universities, in favour of the free pass and, above all, in defence of a public, free and democratic university. The UNE is one of the symbols of the Brazilian student category and, for this reason, it is important that its trajectory is analysed and, above all, rethought historically.
