Excerpt from Word Pictures, and How to Paint Them
One of the first things to be learned in read ing or speaking is, How to breathe. Some may think this a matter of minor importance, but it has a vi tal bearing not only on our speech, but upon the whole physical system. Inhale always through the nostrils; never through the mouth.
The nostrils have a suitable lining for catching minute particles of dust, and other irritating mat ter found in the air, thus preventing it from enter. Ing the delicate air cells of the lungs, and laying the foundation of disease. Inbreathing through the mouth, this matter is not obstructed, and the mois ture that nature furnishes to keep the vocal organs ?exible is dried up, and the consequence is hoarse ness, and disease of the vocal organs.
If you value health and a good voice. Breathe through the nostrils, 'make it a fixed habit.
The air is the great vitalizer of the whole system, and as it is free to all, use it not sparingly by filling only a part of the lungs at each inspiration, but fill them full, especially the lower air cells.
