Bookseller Notes
A comprehensive collection of Gordon Craig's engravings, highlighting his adaptability: from his renowned architectural stage-set style, to silhouetted figures against densely patterned backdrops reminiscent of Vuillard, from lofty cloudscapes and clustered hill-top towns to 'Parochial Marmalade' complete with cottage loaf and steaming teapot. The text ends with the artist's description of the prize medal he received for his work, 'a curious medal which only the engraver can get... It is worn on the hand, and yet it is not of gold nor a ring. It is a bump - nothing handsome. It is fixed on the palm of the right hand in a straight line below the third finger. Diamonds and pearls are not so rare.'[with:] A pencil initialled woodcut proof by Craig, dated 1923, printed on Japanese paper, 57 x 57mm. (the proof itself dated 1910) mounted and loosely inserted in the book, as issued. Craig's pencilled note at the foot of the proof 'Only 60 signed copies. Copy 14.'[and with:] prospectus (slightly toned).
