From the Foreword: In the story, With Kit Carson in the Rockies, an attempt has been made not only to picture vividly and truthfully the picturesque and adventurous life of the trapper, but, also to indicate his proper place in the history of the West; and it is hoped that the tale will leave the boy reader with a better understanding of how the shackles of the savagery of the wilderness were struck off the limbs of the mighty young giant of the West, and with a truer appreciation of the men of the rifle and the trap who were the first to strike a blow at those shackles.
