When I was a little girl, I journeyed to distant lands. I went on archeological digs in Egypt and expeditions into the steamy jungles of the Amazon. When I stepped out of the back door of our house, the backyard transformed into the world beyond. What began as curiosity became escape. Escape from a parent's disintegration into schizophrenia. Refuge from a culture that scorns nonconformity. In 1986, at the age of 17, I took off running. The planet opened its arms to catch me.
