"This book offers a framework for an American grand strategy with a corresponding approach for visualizing progress towards its achievement. The authors contend that instead of conventional military conflict, irregular warfare (IW)--"activities short of conventional and nuclear warfare that are designed to expand a country's influence and legitimacy, as well as to weaken its adversaries"--along with transnational threats, characterize today's competitive landscape. Thus, in addition to military capabilities, U.S. grand strategy must extend beyond the purview of the DOD.
