Publisher's Synopsis

This research report submitted in partial fulfillment for the requirements of my Master of Architecture degree, at The University of Auckland, New Zealand, June, 1999, scored A+ grade. This thesis investigates wind damage to low-rise domestic buildings in New Zealand, assessing their vulnerability through a comprehensive survey categorized by location, severity, and meteorological conditions. It draws comparisons with significant weather events, such as Hurricane Andrew and Cyclone Tracy, and analyzes historical storms in New Zealand to evaluate building performance, materials, and design practices. The study employs survey questionnaire results alongside local newspaper reports to examine damage patterns, concluding that severe damage begins at wind speeds of 120-130 km/h, relative to NZS 3604: 1990 standards. This research ultimately aims to enhance understanding of architectural resilience against wind events.
