Deputy Marshal Nate Williams thought he was safe from the Cartel. He thought wrong. Cartel data - financials, personnel dossiers, and blackmail background - were being used by the Republic to destroy it. The data had been stolen by a pair of hackers on the planet Fortune. Williams was the deputy marshal who stopped the Cartel from murdering the felon who carried the Cartel data in her bioware. At the same time, the Cartel's successful business relationship with the People's Democracy was being challenged. Profits, influence, and power were at risk and it was no longer business as usual for the Cartel. The Cartel wanted revenge. The Cartel couldn't have the data thieves; it thought they were already dead. So, it would take what it could get. It went after Williams.
