If such a believer, however, is urged to justify his use of Scripture at the bar of common human judgment, or to commend it to others who do not have the same experience with himself, he immediately finds the way encompassed with unexpected difficulties. He may re sort to the expedient of making his own experience, chie?y in the form of religious emotion, the ultimate test of the truth of the Bible. In a word, he may say, I know that this book is true, because I have found it to be true in my own case. But at once the question will be raised: On what grounds that are reasonable and communicable to other minds do you make your own experience the test or guarantee of universal truth? And, furthermore, precisely what is the truth which you think your experience competent to test and guar.
