Recycling of water has become an important aspect of water resources and environmental management policies. It ensures reliable alternative water resources, reduces pollution and achieves a more sustainable form of development. In view of recycling's growing importance it was no surprise that the 3rd International Symposium on Wastewater Reclamation, Recycling and Reuse, held in conjunction with the 1st IWA World Congress was among the best attended sessions of the Congress. This issue contains a selection of 43 papers presented there, under the headings of: water reuse management; agricultural irrigation and storage; disinfection; membrane techniques; water reuse practices; and advanced treatment for water reuse. Several papers from Asia and Europe offer national experiences and perspectives. Project planning problems, pitfalls and keys to success are discussed through examples from Australia, the United States and Europe. Wastewater reuse is acknowledged as a basic component of integrated water resources management, and its environmental impact is taken into account in economic evaluations. These papers provide an authoritative exposition of the technology and practice of water reuse today, highlighting the benefits which can be expected, and the methods and research underway that are continuing to develop water reuse as a feasible, safe and efficient sustainable resource.
