Publisher's Synopsis
These ten self-guided walks take the reader through the world of the long Regency - the span of Jane Austen's lifetime.
London has a long history and fire, war and redevelopment have destroyed, changed and blurred the physical evidence of that past. Yet the city that Beau Brummel, the Prince Regent, the Bow Street Runners and Jane Austen knew can still be found, sometimes intact, sometimes only as a ghost.
Taking in both High Society and the underworld of Regency London the routes include explorations of fashionable Mayfair and the often scandalous world of St James; a walk through the City of London taking in no fewer than three notorious prisons on the way; an excursion south of the river to Southwark for a gruesome operating theatre and the only old coaching inn left in London and the heart of power in Westminster and Whitehall.
Each is about two miles (three kilometres), but they are easy to divide up or combine.
