Publisher's Synopsis
Volume VI: God's Commandments
This sixth book in the series Why Is Life So Hard? explores the wisdom and beauty of God's commandments. Psalm 119 is a spectacular poem that contains multiple benefits from what God has made known about life, about his world. The psalmist who wrote it used different words to capture truth. When we hear "commandment" no doubt we think of the Ten, and our backs go up against being told how to behave, whether we're religious or not. Interestingly, while its root does mean to establish by law, it has the scope of giving legal form to a nation, not issuing orders around the barracks. As such, these are instructions for how to behave for the good of the group. When we fail to follow them, we break communion with others, and often open ourselves to censure. Commandments are standing, non-negotiable rules. We are expected to live by them because we already belong to the group. As we make our way through difficult times, it helps to remember that everything God has said is for our good. If we respect and honor his words, we'll find him walking with us.
