His work was originally commenced as a letter to a valued friend of early years, who took a leading part in the general meeting of the English Church Union, ' held in July 1866 by which meeting a formal resolution was adopted, welcoming the publication of Dr. Pusey's 'eirenicon, ' and expressing the earnest desire of the Association for the restoration of unity to Christendom.
