The example of this first American benefactor to the cause of free education was not without results in his sec tion of the colony, for we find that forty years later, in 1675, worthy Master Henry Peasley doth devise six hundred acres of land lying in the parish of Abingdon, County of Gloucester, together with ten cows and one breeding mare, for the maintenance of a free schoole for ever, to be kept with a schoole master for the education of the children of the parishes of Abingdon and Ware for ever.
