Publisher's Synopsis
Text in German. So far, the multi-faceted engagement at the round tables of the districts has been overshadowed by the achievements of the Central Round Table of the GDR. However, this does not do justice to its actual importance. This study deals with the role and function of the 15 district round tables in the East German transition process and their specific contribution to democratization in the regions. Tasks and ways of working, but above all opportunities to influence and have an impact, make the districts' round tables appear extremely different. This alone shows the diversity of the processes during the "democratization from below", which lasted only a few months. Last but not least, this spectrum is also an expression of an independent democratization of the GDR, which is characterized by civil society activities.
