Publisher's Synopsis

OPERATION RESTORE HOPE, the United States-led operation in Somalia, began on the 9th of December 1992. The United States-led mission was designated United Nations Task Force Somalia (UNITAF). UNITAF was given the full political support of the United Nations, but the operation would be planned and executed by the United States. This book will examine the role of OAS operations in support of UNITAF and UNOSOM II. OAS engagements in Somalia were limited, but the presence of OAS aircraft greatly impacted ground operations. Additionally, this book will examine the use of the JFACC during UNITAF operations and the command and control system used by UNOSOM II. In August of 1992, the United States provided logistic support and established a Joint Task Force (JTF), designated OPERATION PROVIDE RELIEF, in conjunction with the formation of UNOSOM. UNOSOM and OPERATION PROVIDE RELIEF would yield to UNITAF/OPERATION RESTORE HOPE in December of 1992. UNITAF, in May of 1993, would turn the mission back to the United Nations under UNOSOM II. The transfer of the mission from a United States-led and equipped force to a United Nations led and equipped force would cause a myriad of challenges.
