Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Unadjusted Differences With the Government of Spain, (to Accompany Bill H. R. No. 678): January 24, 1859
The removal of the discriminating duties referred to would open a market for pounds of our meats and lard, without adding anything for the increased consumption which may be expected to result from the superior quality and cheaper price of the article we would furnish. At ten cents per pound, this would give to our agri culturists where now they get nothing.
Similar statements might be made in reference to Indian corn, rice, and other articles of food, of which our farmers produce a large sur plus, much of which is wastefully consumed because there is no acces sible market for its sale, and all of which is reduced in value because the demand is unequal to the supply in those markets which are accessible.
