Publisher's Synopsis
Smart materials and structures are one of the world's emerging technologies, particularly in the USA and Japan. The 37 papers in this volume were presented at the First US-Japan Workshop on Smart Materials and Structures, held at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, December 3-4, 1995.;The topics covered include: research activities of smart materials and structures in the USA and Japan; smart polymeric composites with applications to infrastructures, ground and aerospace vehicles; shape-memory alloy (SMA) materials and their composites; smart materials based on the coupling behaviour between physical and mechanical phenomena; piezoelectric, piezoresistive, magnetostrictive and their composite materials and structures, where the stress and strain are key driving or resulting parameters; and the design of a new class of electronic and optical composite materials with unique sensing capabilities.
