Publisher's Synopsis
Early one morning in June of 2021, when the sun was just coming up, I walked in to see my daughter, kneeling up in bed and looking out the window. She said, "Daddy, the moon is singing a lullaby to the stars!" "Are you dreaming?" "Yesss..." she said. I asked her if she could tell me about it, or could she draw a picture of what she saw. The "main character" in this book is the image she drew that morning. It is a perfect poetic image. Stars in her eyes. A happy smile. A little star just outside. I let my meditations over the next couple months create in me a tribute to my daughter and her dream and this book is what emerged. It is a lullaby - a poetic story - that tells of the moon's longing to "be a star." Though she was singing a comfort to the stars, she was also singing with longing because she wanted to be a star. This is an especially important point to make with children: they are enough. Their light. Their love. Their hope. THEY: are enough. How many of us still live with a feeling of discontent - like something's missing. We haven't gotten "it" yet? Where do these messages come from? What can we do to make sure that the message "you're not enough" doesn't sabotage one more child?
In this story the moon longs to be "a star." The consolation of the stars comes back to her in this story and she finds comfort in the message from them. She realizes that she is - with her star "not so far" - quite bright enough. Her light is just right as she and the sun team up to do what only they can do: "make a night light." So many of our young people seek "followers" and "subscribers" in a world that's been darkened digitally - seeking to have their light reflected in the strange new world that comes to them from the internet. They seek their reflections in likes and followers. When we want to be a "star" we blunt our own light - you don't have to be a "star" to be bright! You are enough is the message that we need. It is the message which this book offers all who read it. What a beautiful dream - "pay attention to your dreams..." They might be telling you something.
