Excerpt from Twenty-Seventh Annual Report of the Board of Indian Commissioners. 1895
In my endeavors to secure the cooperation of State superintendents of instruction I have met with hearty response from the States of Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa, and I believe that it will be possible in most of these States to transfer the work of Indian education to the State author ities within a comparatively short period. In some of these States I am informed that the subject Will be submitted to the State legislatures within the near future, and that efforts will be made to secure suitable measures looking to such transfer.
