Excerpt from Twenty-First Biennial Report of the North Carolina State Department of Archives and History: July 1, 1944 to June 30, 1946
During the twenty-four-month period covered by this report, the Department sought to carry out the duties and functions prescribed by law, in spite of abnormal conditions and unusual problems. During the first part of the period, World War II was drawing to a close, and during the latter part, though the war had ended, the country was undergoing the travail of postwar reconversion, with conditions any thing but normal. This situation inevitably affected the Department and its program.
