Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Treatise on Valve-Gears: With Special Consideration of the Link-Motions of Locomotive Engines
The slide-valve gears are those which are most applied and most important, and as also they alone induce R theoretical studies of the distribution of steam effected through them, an investigation into the seldom-applied valve and cock-gears has been entirely omitted in the following treatise. The slide-valve consists generally of a hollowed plate, which moves backwards and forwards over the entrances of the steam-ports; or if the slide-valve acts as a ao-called expansion slide-valve, it only consists of a single plate, which may or may not have slots or ports for the admission of steam.
