Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Travels in the Countries Between Alexandria and Paraetonium, the Lybian Desert, Siwa, Egypt, Palestine, and Syria, in 1821
The right of retaliation is often exercised in the most cruel manner by the offended family against the offender or his re lations, as it is in the Bannat, Bosnia, Albania, Moldavia, Wal lachia, and in the East. They wear the national Sclavonian dress, are generally armed, but without endangering the public safety, as the plundering Montenegrines do, and custom has pre served what originated in necessity. They are obstinate, addicted to spirituous liquors, fond of liberty, and attached to religious prejudices: the Greeks are constantly at variance with the Cathe lies, and all live chiefly by commerce.
