Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Travels in India and Kashmir, Vol. 2 of 2
My munschi and' Lala Mackermal, the func tionary sent by the governor of Kashmir to attend me, accompanied me in the howdah. The Sirdar with his horsemen formed an escort. My suite was now swelled to a considerable number. My personal attendants amounted to twenty-six munschi, khidmatgar, wardrobe keeper, cooks, washers, says, ferasche, &c. Then there was the mehmendar, or lieutenant with his troop of forty men, the munschi, Lala Mackermal and his attendant, the thanahdar, and his people; these, with the Sirdar and his horsemen, and about seventy coolies and bearers, not to mention numbers that curiosity had attracted from the city, enabled me to make a very imposing entry into Kashmir.
