I have no new theory-of the infinitive to advance, nor shall I venture on the comparative side of the study, although I know that in the present drift of research it will be hard to gain consideration for any view which does not take in a large group of languages. Yet I am convinced that in this investigation the only safe course is to follow the special develbpment of Greek, and in support of this conviction, I would offer a few preliminary remarks.
