Auszug: ...The animals were now suffering for water, and some were beginning to show clearly signs of giving out. Our "chow" or rations were growing slim. The Comanches, by that lucky storm--for them--still had a night's march ahead of us, so he prudently, but most reluctantly, turned back. There was nothing to cook our food with but buffalo chips (bois de vache), and with scarcely water enough to wet our hps. We made a dry camp at our impromptu bivouac of the night before; the next day, in a sort of melancholy procession, reaching the lagoon, where it was decided to fill up with fresh rain water, and rest the command. The men on this day's march had picked up hundreds of smooth, well-worn cedar lodge-poles which the Comanches had dropped in their headlong flight, to be used for fuel at our bivouac supper. It was a most singular sight to see a long column of five hundred troopers, each with two or three fourteen-foot poles raised high in air over their shoulders. Mackenzie, who, at the head of the column, when his attention was first called to it, suspecting a joke, or that they were being carried along as relics, was about to seriously order them to be thrown away, when somebody suggested their possible utility for fuel instead of buffalo chips, which scented our bacon and coffee. They reminded one of a traveling circus, rather than a well drilled, disciplined body of cavalry. The writer had been riding all this time with his battered leg in splints and closely bandaged. Upon Dr. Choate's inspection this day, after removing the bandages, it was found that it was not only not broken or even fractured, but was terribly bruised, and the flesh badly crushed and frightfully lacerated.
