Publisher's Synopsis
This work draws on evidence provided by research findings, including case studies and a nationwide questionnaire survey, to evaluate the extent to which the foreign language needs of commerce and industry in the UK are recognized, and are being met. This book examines the approaches adopted by companies towards language and cultural training, and asks whether firms are sufficiently aware of the existing level of language skills among their employees. Initiatives to support language use in commerce and industry, such as the DTI's "Languages for Export" campaign, are reviewed, and suggestions for further assistance, are discussed. The study ends with an assessment of the provision of opportunities for foreign language study in the education system, and an appraisal of the extent to which they can be seen to serve as an adequate foundation for the needs of the country. The book looks not only at the needs of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), but also at those of larger companies.
