Excerpt from To the Members of the Union League
By the action of the League at its special meeting of Novem her, and in the election of the new Board in December, 1874, two things were clearly determined upon: That the League (after some inaction) should enter into the field of reform within the Republican party, and that its officers, to whom this work was recommitted, should be free from every suspicion of bias towards any political clique or combination.
The Board, had it been disposed, could not have disregarded these positive mandates of the League. It felt bound, as it is believed it. Was also its plea-sure, to endeavor to carry them out.
