The following recollections of Service in the Ranks of the English Army were originally written as a means of keeping fresh in my memory an interesting Chapter of my Life, the details of which would otherwise most certainly have been forgotten amidst occupa tions of a different but more natural character. I therefore purposely refrained from describing those scenes of the military life in which, either by accident or by good fortune, I was not called to bear a part.
