Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Thoughts at Fourscore and Earlier: A Medley
Not the dear Old land, _but its people, and the changes in their condition, socially and otherwise, I am thinking about, chie?y. I am also thinking about the changes in myself: the changes of my inner man, during these fourscore years. That man would be the author of a grand philosophical treatise who could give us a true account and interpretation of the causes of change in men's convictions and Opinions. What remarkable changes some Of the most eminent men of this century have undergone! Nay, what Changes they are undergoing and mani festing, even at this day. And yet, it may be that their changes would be seen to be less strange than the crowd judge them to be, if their life-course were thoroughly studied belike, it would be clearly seen that 'the child was father to the man' that they were the same men, in reality, all along.
