Excerpt from Thirty-Fifth Annual Report of the Secretary of State on the Registration of Births and Deaths, Marriages and Divorces in Michigan, for the Year 1901
In this part of the report an eifort has been made to present informa tion and data sufficient to give a general idea of the scope and results of registration in Michigan during the year 1901, and which will serve as an introduction to the more detailed study of the statistics in the divisions following. This is the fourth report issued from this Department since the opera tion of the new registration law for deaths, which went into effect August twenty-ninth, 1897, and as the law has been longer in operation, and hence more Widely and better understood, it is probable that a somewhat higher degree of accuracy in returns has been attained than in the earlier years of its Operation. A change from previous reports has been made with this issue in the matter of compilation of stillbirths. While stillbirths are required to be registered in the same way as deaths from any other cause, they are not, as formerly, included in the statement of total deaths, and will be treated as an entirely separate item. This is in accordance with modern statistical practice and corresponds to a similar change in the mortality statistics of the United States census.
