He worked as a lecturer in physics at Narendrapur Ramkrishna Mission College (Calcutta) during 1979-81 and then joined, Visva Bharati University in 1981. Since then he has been teaching physics and engaged in research in Condensed Matter Physics. He did his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu University and Post Doctoral work at the Department of Physics, Calcutta University. Professor Roy has visited France under Indo-French bilateral exchange programme for research in the field of High Temperature Superconductivity.
