Publisher's Synopsis
Half of these papers originated in a one-day workshop held in April 1992 at the Institute of Germanic Studies, London. They have been augmented by further contributions which both complement those given at the workshop and serve to reflect some current trends in Fontane studies. The collection as a whole falls roughly into three sections, centred respectively on translation, on Fontane and the British Isles (especially Fontane and London), and on Fontane the novelist and his pivotal position between 19th-century realism and the modernism of the 'fin de siècle'.
